New Delhi, Jan 18: Shubman Gill became the youngest player to score a double hundred in a one-day international, during the first ODI between India and New Zealand on Wednesday in Hyderabad.

In addition, Gill is the fifth Indian, behind Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, and Ishan Kishan, to score a double-century in an ODI.

Ishan Kishan set the record for the youngest double hundred in an ODI on December 10, but Shubman Gill, who is 23 years and 132 days old, surged to a spectacular double hundred on a difficult surface, shattering the record after just 1 month and 8 days.

Before being removed for 34 off 38, Rohit Sharma, the only player to score three ODI double hundreds, looked promising.

Mitchell Santner’s left-arm spin caused Virat Kohli, who entered the batting order with three hundreds in his previous four ODIs, to be dismissed. Ishan Kishan only achieved 5 off 14 balls despite not being included in the playing XI for the three-match series against Sri Lanka.

Although Suryakumar Yadav played a nice camouflage, Shubman Gill, who had expertly adapted, was always going to bear the brunt of the responsibility.

Shubman Gill recorded his second one-day international century on Sunday. Three days later, Gill picked up the pace once more, hitting some beautiful shots on his way to his second consecutive hundred. He found a capable comrade in Hardik Pandya before a strong alliance was severed in questionable circumstances.
