Bangkok, May 12: The Indian women’s badminton team was thrashed 0-3 by Thailand in the quarterfinals of the Uber Cup Final Bangkok on Thursday, with double Olympic medalist P V Sindhu fighting hard before succumbing to Ratchanok Intanon in the opening set.

World No. 7 Sindhu was off her game for the second day in a row, squandering a game lead to lose 21-18 17-21 12-21 to eighth-ranked Intanon in a 59-minute first women’s singles encounter. Sindhu currently has a 4-7 head-to-head record against Intanon as a result of the loss.

The women’s doubles duo of Shruti Mishra and Simran Singhi fell 16-21 13-21 to the Thai pair of Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai, dropping India to 0-2.

Aakarshi Kashyap fared no better, losing 16-21 11-21 against Pornpawee Chochuwong in the second singles match, which lasted 42 minutes. The final two sets of the tie were rendered superfluous as Thailand took an insurmountable 3-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Tanisha Crasto and Treesa Jolly of India were set to face Benyapa Aimsaard and Nuntakarn Aimsaard in the second women’s doubles event, while Ashmita Chaliha was set to face Busanan Ongbamrungphan.

Notably, Sindhu had earlier lost in straight games to world number four An Seyoung in India’s final Group D encounter, which was blanked 0-5 by Korea on Wednesday.

However, India had already qualified for the quarterfinals after securing a top-two finish in the group with back-to-back victories over Canada and the United States. Later in the day, the Indian men’s team will play Malaysia in the Thomas Cup Final quarterfinals.
