New Delhi, Jan 13: India reported 2,47,417 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, informed the Health Ministry on Thursday. For the first time in over eight months, India surpassed the 2-lakh case milestone with a surge of over 50,000 cases in less than 24 hours. On Wednesday, a large outbreak was identified in Rajasthan, with nearly 10,000 new cases reported, and 38 individuals diagnosed with Covid at the Magh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
With 84,825 recoveries and 380 deaths, active cases currently stand at 11,17,531. The daily positivity rate has risen to 13.11%.
The country’s Omicron tally has risen to 5,488, with Maharashtra (1,367) and Rajasthan (792) contributing the highest number of cases. Other states like Delhi has 549 cases, Kerala has 486, Karnataka 479, West Bengal 294, and UP has 275 cases of the new variant.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will convene a virtual meeting with the chief ministers of all states on Thursday afternoon to evaluate the coronavirus situation across the country, in the wake of the recent Omicron-fueled rise in Covid-19 cases. This comes just a day after the health ministry reported a dramatic increase in the country’s case positive rate, which jumped from 1.1% on December 30 to 11.05% on January 12.
