India detects 11 Covid variants in 124 international passengers in 11 days

New Delhi, Jan 5: About 124 overseas traveller were tested positive for COVID-19 after being screened upon arrival in India over the past 11 days, according to official sources.

Officials stated that 124 of the 19,227 travellers who were being inspected between December 24 and January 3 at airports, seaports, and land ports tested positive.

According to sources, these travellers tested positive for 11 different sub-variants of Omicron.

Of the 124 positive samples, genome sequencing results of 40 were received of which XBB including XBB.1 was found in the maximum 14 samples. BF 7.4.1 has been found in one sample: Official Sources

With the recent surge in cases in several countries, the nation is on high alert, and the emphasis has shifted back to Covid-appropriate behaviour, such wearing masks and keeping a physical distanceA total.

India implemented random testing at airports last month to find any potential new variants. Additionally, it is mandatory for passengers arriving in India from China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Thailand to submit negative Covid results.

Last month, hospitals and healthcare facilities across the country participated in a mock drill. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya visited Safdarjung Hospital in the capital to assess the Covid readiness.

On December 22, the try’s Covid situation and the readiness of the healthcare system were both evaluated at a high-level meeting that the prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, presided over.

Less than 200 instances per day have been reported in India on average for several days.
