New Delhi, Jan 17: The data released by the Union Health Ministry on Monday shows that India has recorded 2,58,089 Covid cases in the previous 24 hours.

So far, 8,209 Omicron instances have been discovered, a 6.02 percent rise over the previous day. The total number of Covid casualties throughout the 24-hour period was 385. The current positivity rate is 19.65 percent.

The active caseload in India is currently 16,56,341.

In the last 24 hours, 1,51,740 recoveries have been recorded, bringing the overall number of recoveries to 3,52,37,461, putting India’s recovery rate at 94.27 percent.

The nationwide immunisation programme, which began on January 16, 2021, has so far resulted in the administration of 157.20 million doses.

Testing is still a priority. So far, 70.37 crore tests have been administered, with 13,13,444 tests administered in the last 24 hours.

According to a preliminary analysis by IIT Madras, India’s ‘R-value,’ which indicates how quickly Covid-19 is spreading, plummeted to 2.2 between January 7 and 13.

While daily Covid cases decreased from 2,71,202 on Sunday to 2,58,089 on Monday, Omicron infections climbed from 7,743 to 8,209.

In India, eight Covid-19 vaccines have been licenced for use in an emergency situation. Covishield from the Serum Institute of India, Covaxin from Bharat Biotech, Russia’s Sputnik V, Moderna, Johnson and Johnson’s single-dose vaccination, Zydus Cadila’s ZyCoV-D, Covovax from the Serum Institute of India, and Corbevax from Biological E.

Booster injections for health and frontline workers, as well as persons aged 60 and up with comorbidities, have been approved with Covaxin and Covishield.

Several governments have implemented Covid limitations (see map), yet overcrowding continues to be an issue in India.

The immunisation campaign for youth aged 15 to 18 years old began on January 3, and over 3.3 crore teenagers have already received their first vaccination.
