India reports 2.71 lakh fresh Covid-19 cases, Omicron tally at 7,743

New Delhi, Jan 16: India reported 2,71,202 new Covid-19 cases and 314 deaths  in the last 24 hours, informed the Union Ministry of Health on Sunday morning.

The daily positivity rate improved marginally from 16.66 per cent to 16.28 per cent while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 13.69 per cent.

With 314 Covid-19 related fatalities in the last 24 hours, death toll risen to 4,86,066. These 314 new fatalities include 106 from Kerala and 39 from West Bengal. Of the total deaths reported so far in India, 1,41,779 are from Maharashtra, 50,674 from Kerala, 38,418 from Karnataka, 36,967 from Tamil Nadu, 25,335 from Delhi, 22,953 from Uttar Pradesh and 20,052 from West Bengal. As many as 1,38,331 people recovered from the virus and the number of active cases in the country  now stand at 15,50,377.

Meanwhile, Country also reported a total of 7,743 Omicron cases, an increase of 28.17 per cent since Saturday. Under the nationwide covid-19 vaccination drive, the cumulative doses administered in the country so far has exceeded ????156.76 crore. A total of 70,24,48,838 samples were tested up to January 15 of which 16,65,404 samples were tested on January 15, said the Ministry of Health.
