India reports 27,553 new Covid-19 cases, Omicron tally rises to 1,525

New Delhi, Jan 2: India reported 27,553 Covid-19 cases and 284 deaths in the last 24 hours, informed the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday.

With 9,249 recoveries recorded in the last 24 hours, the Country’s active caseload stood at 1,22,801. This accounts for less than 1% of total cases which is currently at 0.35%. The total recovery of the country is 3,42,84,561. The recovery rate of the country is currently at 98.27%.

The weekly positivity rate in the country currently stands at 1.35% and the daily positivity rate stands at 2.55%.

According to the ministry, the number of Omicron cases in India reached 1,525, and it has spread to 23 states. Maharashtra and Delhi continue to be the worst-hit states, with 460 and 351 cases respectively.

Major cities across the country have witnessed a surge in their Covid count. There were 2,716 new cases in Delhi. With this, Saturday saw the city’s highest number of single-day incidents since May 21. There were 6,180 new Covid-19 cases reported in Mumbai, with a positive rate of around 13%. Karnataka, too, broke the 1,000-case barrier in a single day, with the state recording 1,033 new Covid cases on Saturday, with Bengaluru Urban reporting 810 of them.

Meanwhile, the Covid vaccination programme for youngsters will begin on Monday, January 3. The Cowin dashboard showed 3,15,416 registrations for 15-18-year-olds till 11.30 p.m. Saturday, the start of the age group’s registration period.

In total 25,75,225 vaccine doses has been administered so far in the country. A total of 68 crore COVID-19 tests have also been conducted in the country so far.
