New Delhi, July 18: In Kerala’s Kannur district, the country’s second case of monkeypox has been verified on Monday. A 31-year-old Kannur resident who had just returned from Dubai was identified as having monkeypox symptoms on Monday. He is receiving care at a government medical school.
On May 13, the patient had returned to Kannur, and the symptoms later materialised. The patient, a 31-year-old, and all of his or her close friends are currently under observation.
Notably, Monkeypox was officially diagnosed in India’s first case on July 14 in the district of Kollam.
The Union Health Ministry issued instructions for treating the monkeypox disease as soon as the first case was discovered. International travellers should avoid close contact with sick persons, contact with dead or live wild animals, and other situations as prescribed by the ministry.
International travellers are also advised not to consume or prepare meat from bushmeat or use items like creams and lotions made from African wild animals, according to the instructions.
Since the start of the year, more than 6,000 cases of monkeypox have been reported from 60 different countries, along with three fatalities. As surveillance grows, more incidents might be anticipated, it said.
According to the World Health Organization, monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transferred to people from animals) with symptoms comparable to those experienced in the past by smallpox sufferers, but being clinically less severe (WHO).
