New Delhi, July 13: The Finance Ministry announced on Wednesday that Oppo’s India branch has received a notice for allegedly evading import duties of Rs 4,389 crore.

Oppo India was issued a show-cause notice (SCN) on July 8 as a result of the discovery of documents during searches of the company’s facilities that showed wilful misdeclaration in the description of some imports and the payment of royalties and licence fees to numerous MNCs, including those with headquarters in China.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has discovered customs duty evasion of around 4,389 crore during an examination of Oppo Mobiles India Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Guangdong Oppo Mobile Telecommunications Corporation Ltd, the ministry said in a statement.

Oppo India responded to the development by stating that it has a “different opinion” on the accusations made in the SCN and will take the necessary actions, including legal recourse.

Oppo India is a responsible corporate and believes in the prudent corporate governance framework. Oppo India will take appropriate steps as may be needed in this regard including any remedies provided under the law,” Oppo said in an email response.

In India, Oppo India manufactures, assembles, wholesale trades, and distributes mobile devices and their related accessories. It deals in a variety of smartphone brands, such as Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme.

The DRI searched Oppo India’s office space and the homes of key management personnel as part of the investigation, and as a result, “incriminating evidence, suggesting deliberate misdeclaration in the description of some materials imported for use in the manufacture of mobile phones” was found. Oppo India improperly claimed duty exemption benefits worth 2,981 crore as a result of this misstatement.
