Pokhran: An Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jet accidentally released an “air store” during a routine exercise at the Pokhran Firing Range in Rajasthan. The incident, which took place due to a technical malfunction, fortunately, did not result in any injuries, according to an official statement from the IAF.

The term “air store” refers to external equipment or munitions attached to a fighter jet, typically for combat or training missions. These stores can include bombs, missiles, or other munitions, and are usually released intentionally during exercises or actual combat situations. In this case, however, the release was inadvertent, raising concerns about the malfunction that triggered it.

The IAF took to the social media platform ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter) to announce the incident, stating, “An inadvertent release of an air store from an Indian Air Force fighter aircraft took place near the Pokhran firing range area, due to a technical malfunction, today.”

The Pokhran Firing Range, located in the Thar Desert, is a designated site for the Indian Armed Forces to test weapons and conduct various firing exercises. It is situated in a remote area, minimizing the risk to civilians during such activities.

Local reports indicate that residents near the village of Ramdevra heard a loud explosion approximately a kilometer away, prompting them to investigate. Upon arrival at the scene, they discovered scattered pieces of an object, believed to be part of the released air store. Sub-Inspector Shankar Lal from the Ramdevra police station confirmed these reports, noting that no one was harmed in the incident.

In response to the malfunction, the IAF has ordered a court of inquiry to investigate the circumstances leading to the accidental release. This inquiry will aim to determine the root cause of the technical issue and prevent similar incidents in the future.

This incident follows a major exercise conducted by the Indian Air Force in April at the same range. The exercise, named ‘Gagan Shakti,’ was one of the largest of its kind, involving all major IAF fighter jets, helicopters, and aircraft in a comprehensive display of the force’s operational capabilities.
