Chennai, July 29: 36 Indian fishermen who were stranded in the Bay of Bengal 130 nautical miles from the coast of Tamil Nadu have been successfully returned by the Indian Naval Ship “Khanjar.”

Three fishing vessels carrying the fishermen were towed for more than 30 hours in rough seas by INS Khanjar.

Three fishing vessels, Sabarainathan, Kalaivani and V Sami, were spotted by INS Khanjar, which is on an operational deployment in the Bay of Bengal, at a distance of about 130 nm from the coast of Tamil Nadu.

The 36 fisherman that were aboard the boats were from Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu.

They were stuck at sea without fuel or supplies for more than two days owing to bad weather and an engine breakdown.

The ship provided the required provisions for the fishing vessels and towed them for more than 30 hours, guaranteeing their safe return to Chennai port on July 28, 2023.

An indigenous Khukri class missile corvette named INS Khanjar is currently serving in the Indian Navy.
