New Delhi, April 13: Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson was fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during their side’s Indian Premier League match against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday.
“Rajasthan Royals have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match 17 against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai on Wednesday,” said a statement by IPL.
Sanju Samson, the team’s captain, was fined Rs 12 lakhs since it was the team’s first infraction of the year under the IPL’s Code of Conduct regarding minimum over-rate infractions.
After being given the opportunity to bat first by CSK, RR scored 175/8 in their 20 overs. After Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) was out early, Jos Buttler (52 off 36 balls, with one four and three sixes) and Devdutt Paddikal (38 off 26 balls, with five boundaries) put up a 77-run partnership for the second wicket. Shimron Hetmyer (30* in 18 balls, with one four and two sixes) and Ravichandran Ashwin (30 in 22 balls, with one four and two sixes) both contributed to RR’s competitive total in the middle order.
For CSK, Ravindra Jadeja (2/21) was the preferred bowler. Despite taking two wickets each, Tushar Deshpande (2/37) and Akash Singh (2/40) allowed runs to be scored. Within his two overs, Moeen Ali took 1/21.
Ruturaj Gaikwad left CSK early in the 176-run chase, costing them just eight runs. Ajinkya Rahane (31 off 19 balls with two fours and a six) and Devon Conway then put up a 68-run partnership. Conway would go on to score 50 runs in 38 deliveries, including six fours, but he was unable to receive assistance from the other end.
MS Dhoni and Jadeja attempted to win it for CSK when they were at 113/6 in 15 overs but came up three runs short. Dhoni (32* off 17 balls, with one four and three sixes) and Jadeja (25* in 15 balls, with one four and two sixes) stitched a 59-run partnership for the seventh wicket as CSK concluded at 172/6 in their 20 overs.
For RR, Yuzvendra Chahal and Ashwin (2/25) were the top two bowlers. Sandeep Sharma and Adam Zampa both claimed a wicket.
Ashwin was named “Player of the Match” for his all-around effort.
