Jamshedpur, July 27: The decomposed body of a 20-year-old girl that was recovered from the Subarnarekha river along Azadnagar police area in Mango late last night was identified as Kriti Kumari, a student of Graduate Women’s College on Wednesday.

A resident of Chandil in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district, the deceased Kriti Kumari is suspected to have committed suicide by jumping into the swollen river.

Police said though the circumstantial evidence suggests it to be a case of suicide, the reason behind the drastic step is yet to be ascertained.

The Sakchi thana where the girl’s father Vinay Kumar Sinha had lodged a missing person report on July 23 is investigating the case having shifted the body to MGM medical college mortuary for postmortem.

“The girl was a third-year English Honours student in the college and her father had come to drop her at the college on July 21 morning by riding about 25 km. The girl had promised she would return home on her own, but she did not return home since then,” said the OC, Sakchi thana, Rajesh Kumar Singh.

He said having searched her in the relatives and friends circles, the girl’s father had lodged a missing person report with the Sakchi thana on July 23. He pointed out that Azadnagar police had last night recovered a girl’s body from the Subernarekha river late last night which was identified as that of Kriti Kumari this morning.

Singh pointed out that as the girl had put on a college uniform and the missing person report lodged with the Sakchi thana was related to a Graduate Women’s College student, they did not take much time to get the body recognised.

The OC said the deceased’s parents were summoned to the mortuary where they confirmed the body to be their daughter Kriti Kumari.

According to relatives, Kriti was a girl of introverted personality and would speak very little.

The parents are said to have told the police that Kriti had not had any affair with anyone as such.

But as no one commits suicide without any strong reason and there is no mark of injury on the body as such, the police seemed to be in a fix about the exact reason behind the girl’s death.

“As the reason behind the girl’s death is shrouded with mystery, we have started investigating it. Moreover, we are waiting for the postmortem report which may unfold whether it is a case of suicide or something else, ” said the OC while talking to this website.
