Tokyo, Nov 30: Japan on Tuesday confirmed its first case of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
A man who had arrived in the country from Namibia at Narita airport near Tokyo was found to be infected with the heavily mutated strain.
“The patient is staying in a medical facility and the government is aware of his close contacts,” said chief cabinet secretary Hirokazu Matsuno to the reporters.
Japan shut its borders to foreigners on Tuesday for at least a month, among the strictest measures in the world to halt entry of Omicron variant.
Notably, new Covid variant, ‘Omicron’ which has been declared as a variant of concern by the World Health Organization (WHO) has triggered global worry. On Monday, the World Health Organization stated that the overall global risk related to the new coronavirus variant of concern ‘Omicron’ is “very high”.
