Ranchi, Dec 11: The state’s preparedness for security is under the scanner with only 16 dogs available in the dog squad of the Jharkhand Police against the 58 approved dogs which play a pivotal role in the action against Naxalites, solving a murder mystery, and VIP security.
At present, out of 16 dogs available, 4 are trackers and 12 are explosive sniffers. The total vacant post for canines is 42, including 18 trackers and 24 explosive sniffers.
On the shortage of canines in the dog squad, ADG (CID) Prashant Kumar said that there has been a shortage of the dogs from the past three to four years as the Army Veterinary Corps was unable to meet the requirements of the dogs.
“We have planned to purchase the dogs from the local vendors and have also made tie-ups with the CISF to train the dogs so that in the next eight to nine months shortage can be fulfilled,” Kumar said.
To meet the shortage of dogs in the dog squad, Jharkhand Police will procure the dog from local vendors. For the dog squad, KCI registered non-government source/local dog breeding centres were physically inspected. A meeting was held on December 7 under the chairmanship of SP Karthik S of CID to get information about the availability of quality canine and to provide the report related to the purchase of the dog. Many other points related to the purchase of dogs were also discussed.
In the meeting held for the purchase of dogs, it has been agreed to constitute a sub-committee under the leadership of DSP Ranjit Lakra, Dhurva Arun Sanadhya of Training Center CISF Ranchi, Veterinary Officer Arvind Kumar Singh of Dog Squad CID and Inspector Jose Francis Tirkey will be the members of the committee.
This committee will review and decide how many dogs can be purchased with this money according to the expenditure on the training dogs by CISF and other training centres.
Along with this, the time limit will be set for completing the procedures related to the purchase of the dogs and documents will be made available related to the tender for their purchase, so that further action can be taken in this regard.
