Daltonganj, Jan 9: A sub zonal commander of the banned naxal outfit JJMP Bhavani Bhuiyan alias Bhagirithi surrendered on Sunday to the DIG police Palamu R K Lakra, DC Shashi Ranjan, SP Chandan kr Sinha and additional SP K Vijay Shankar in Daltonganj.

He laid down his one Insas rifle, three magazines, 83 rounds of live fire, 36 high explosive grenades, camping equipment, letter heads of the JJMP and two pouches for the ammunition.

“He did not carry any reward on his head but since he surrendered with the Insas rifle he is entitled to get a cheque worth rupees one lakh and it was given to him too,” said SP Chandan kr Sinha.

The surrendered naxal has 5 cases in all spanning over two districts Garhwa and Palamu. He joined extremism only in 2017 after finding out a cell phone number of a naxal pasted on the bark of the tree. He hails from Hutar village under Ramgarh police station in Palamu.

Bhuiyan said there are still around 40 cadres in the JJMP. On being asked as to why he left extremism and joined the mainstream life to which he said he trusted police that has assured him of life ahead, certain future of him and his family.

SP said naxals when they learn that one among them is going to join the mainstream of life, spread a lot of canards like shoot out after surrender or leaving the surrendered to his own miserable fate but SP hastened to add we respect and keep our words as enshrined in the state surrender policy and proceed accordingly in which the surrendered fellow has no discomfort of any sort at all.

“It took us one and a half months to get Bhuiyan in our fold. Additional SP K Vijay Shankar and Officer in charge of Ramgarh police station Prabhat k Rai played a major successful role in his surrender,” said SP.

This is the first surrender of a sub zonal commander of the banned naxal outfit in a span of more than four years in Palamu.

“The surrender policy of the Jharkhand state government is far better than the surrender policy of other states like Orissa, Chhatisgarh etc. our officers worked hard to wean this naxal into the mainstay of life. The surrender of the sub zonal commander has come as a big jolt to the JJMP outfit,” said DIG police Palamu R K Lakra.

SP informed that the surrendered naxal would be moved to the open jail in Hazaribag after due legal procedures and formalities as he has his case in court of Daltonganj right now.
