Jammu, Feb 2: A government school teacher who had turned to terrorism has been detained by Jammu and Kashmir Police, and an improvised explosive device (IED) made of perfume has been found in his hands. In the course of their investigation into the twin bombings that occurred in Jammu’s Narwal neighbourhood on January 21 and left nine persons injured, police detained Arif, a resident of the Reasi district.

Dilbag Singh, the director general of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, claimed that Arif was associated with the Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist organisation. He said, “An IED hidden within a perfume bottle was seized from his possession.”

The Jammu and Kashmir police chief said this was the first time that such a type of a bomb was recovered in the Union Territory.

“This is the first time we have recovered a perfume IED. We have not recovered any perfume IED before. The IED will blast if anyone tries to press or open it. Our special team will handle that IED.”

Arif apparently cooperated with his Pakistani handlers and acknowledged his part in the bombing of the bus carrying pilgrims to Vaishno Devi in May, which resulted in four deaths and 24 injuries.
