New Delhi, Jan 7: All construction activities in and around Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli have been suspended in the wake of cracks that have appeared in buildings in the town due to land subsidence, District Magistrate Himanshu Khurana said on Saturday.

The District Magistrate told ANI that due to the circumstances in Joshimath, all building work has been stopped.

Pushkar Singh Dhami, the chief minister of Uttarakhand, is due to visit the town and physically asses the regions affected by ground subsidence.

“In view of the local situation in Joshimath, all kinds of construction work has been stopped until further orders. The Chief Minister will physically inspect the landslide-affected areas of Joshimath and will also visit the relief camps here,” the district magistrate said.

On Thursday morning, residents of Joshimath blocked the Badrinath Highway in protest and to urge the authorities to treat the issue of land sinking seriously.

According to the Disaster Management Act of 2005, Hotel View and Malari Inn’s operations were suspended pending further instructions after 27 residents of the Sunil ward and 50 residents of Parsari reported cracks.

Nine families were uprooted on Thursday, including four from the Joshimath Municipal Corporation, one from the Gurudwara Joshimath, one from the Tourist Hostel, one from Manohar Bagh, and other families.

So far, 38 families in total have been displaced.
