Kathmandu: K P Sharma Oli, a seasoned political figure known for his tactical maneuvering, has been appointed as Nepal’s Prime Minister once again, aiming to bring stability to a nation often plagued by political turmoil. This marks Oli’s fourth tenure as the country’s chief executive, a position he has held amidst varying alliances and challenges.
The Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML), under Oli’s leadership, recently withdrew support from the government led by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, paving the way for Oli’s return. Oli, 72, formed an alliance with his erstwhile rival-turned-ally Sher Bahadur Deuba of the Nepali Congress, positioning the largest party in the House of Representatives for governance over the remaining term.
President Ramchandra Paudel officially appointed Oli amidst a backdrop of Nepal’s complex political landscape, characterized by frequent changes in leadership. Since Nepal’s adoption of an interim Constitution in 2008, the country has witnessed 13 different governments, with leaders like Dahal, Deuba, and Oli engaged in a political “musical chairs.”
Oli’s return comes at a crucial juncture where stability is paramount for Nepal’s development and international relations, particularly with neighboring India and China. Known for his pro-China stance, Oli has previously navigated tense relations with India, including disputes over territorial claims and diplomatic spats.
Gunaraj Luitel, chief editor of Nagarik Daily, highlighted the challenge Oli faces in maintaining political order amidst diverse provincial demands and coalition dynamics. “Sidelining smaller parties has contributed to instability in Nepal. The alliance between CPN-UML and Nepali Congress aims to stabilize governance and address political discord,” Luitel commented.
Oli, born on February 22, 1952, in Eastern Nepal, has a storied political career marked by activism against autocratic regimes and significant leadership roles within the Communist Party of Nepal. His return as Prime Minister underscores his enduring influence in Nepali politics and the challenges ahead in steering the country towards stability and prosperity.
As Nepal navigates its political landscape under Oli’s leadership, observers await his approach towards regional diplomacy, economic partnerships, and internal governance reforms. The coming months will be critical in assessing Oli’s ability to uphold stability amidst Nepal’s intricate political framework.
