New Delhi, March 24: The Supreme Court on Thursday has declined to set an urgent hearing date for the Karnataka Hijab case appeals. “We shall hear in due course,” the court stated.
“There is urgency,” said Senior Advocate Devadatt Kamat, who is representing the petitioners. The problem is that the tests are starting. In response of which, the Chief Justice of India said that the exams have nothing to do with this issue.
Notably on Thursday, a new appeal was filed in the Supreme Court, challenging the Karnataka’s high court order. The High Court ruled on Tuesday that wearing a hijab (a headscarf worn by Muslim women) is not an essential practice in Islam, dismissing several petitions contesting a ban on hijabs at educational institutions. The decision puts an end to a months-long debate in Karnataka, where students staged protests because they were not allowed to wear hijabs in educational institutions.
