Karnataka Hijab verdict: BC Nagesh, Pralhad Joshi welcome HC order, Mufti says deeply disappointing

New Delhi, March 15: Union minister Pralhad Joshi, Karnataka Education Minister BC Nagesh welcomed the Karnataka High Court verdict on the Hijab row.

“I’m happy that govt’s stand has been upheld by Karnataka High Court. I request to the girls who went to the court should follow the judgment, education is more important than any other things,” said BC Nagesh.

“I appeal to everyone that the state & country has to go forward, everyone has to maintain peace by accepting the order of HC. The basic work of students is to study. So leaving all this aside they should study and be united,” said Pralhad Joshi.

On the other hand PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti called the order deeply disappointing.

“Karnataka HC’s decision to uphold the Hijab ban is deeply disappointing. On one hand we talk about empowering women yet we are denying them the right to a simple choice. Its isn’t just about religion but the freedom to choose,” she tweeted.

Notably, the Karnataka High Court ruled on Tuesday that wearing a hijab (a headscarf worn by Muslim women) is not an essential practice in Islam, dismissing several petitions contesting a ban on hijabs at educational institutions. The decision puts an end to a months-long debate in Karnataka, where students staged protests because they were not allowed to wear hijabs in educational institutions.
