West Texas: In a landmark moment for space travel and women empowerment, Blue Origin’s latest spaceflight successfully carried an all-female crew — including global pop icon Katy Perry — to the edge of space and back. The flight took off from West Texas early morning and lasted around 10 minutes, crossing the Karman line, the internationally recognised boundary of space.
Crew Included Journalist, Scientist, and Civil Rights Advocate
Alongside Katy Perry, the crew included renowned journalist Gayle King, Jeff Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sanchez, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyn, and film producer Kerianne Flynn.
This marked Blue Origin’s 11th human spaceflight and its first all-women mission since the solo spaceflight of Valentina Tereshkova in 1963.
A Journey Beyond The Stars
The fully automated sub-orbital mission lifted the women over 100 km above Earth, where they experienced a brief but breathtaking moment of weightlessness, floating above the planet.
Ahead of her historic flight, Perry spoke of her preparations, revealing how she read books by Carl Sagan and immersed herself in astrophysics to mentally gear up for the adventure.
“I’ve always been fascinated by the stars. We are all made of stardust,” Perry said, adding that the mission was about breaking barriers and inspiring young girls to dream beyond limitations.
Space Travel Meets Women Empowerment
Known for her space-themed hits like “E.T.” and “Firework,” Perry expressed how motherhood and her passion for STEM education fueled her desire to join the mission. “Being a mother just makes you level up with that type of power,” she said, referring to her daughter, Daisy.
Blue Origin celebrated the moment as a historic step for women in space exploration. The mission patch designed for the flight symbolised each woman’s unique contributions and legacy.
A Technological Feat
The New Shepard spacecraft carried the astronauts beyond the Earth’s atmosphere at speeds exceeding three times the speed of sound, before making a safe return to the West Texas desert.
This flight adds Perry to Blue Origin’s list of high-profile passengers, which includes Star Trek legend William Shatner.
