New Delhi: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge addressed the media on Wednesday, explaining why the opposition INDIA bloc parties walked out of the Rajya Sabha during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech. Kharge accused Modi of “lying” and stated that misleading the public is a habit of the Prime Minister.
Kharge’s comments followed the Opposition’s walkout from the upper house while Modi was discussing the Constitution. “It’s his habit to lie, mislead people, and say things beyond truth,” Kharge said. He accused the BJP, RSS, Jan Sangh, and their political forefathers of opposing the Constitution of India and burning effigies of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, calling it a “shameful” act.
Kharge further clarified that Dr. Ambedkar credited the Congress for drafting the Constitution. He pointed out that the RSS criticized the Constitution in their 1950 editorial for not reflecting India’s history, highlighting their long-standing opposition to it.
During his reply to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address, Modi emphasized the importance of the Constitution formulated by Dr. BR Ambedkar, stating that it has allowed him to hold public office. He expressed his deep respect for the Constitution, describing it as more than just a compilation of rules.
Modi also criticized the Opposition, noting that he proposed celebrating November 26 as Constitution Day, which was rejected by those who now “wave around the Constitution.” This remark triggered protests from the Opposition leaders in Parliament.
As the Opposition walked out, Modi remarked that the country was witnessing their actions. He accused them of lacking the strength to face the truth and listen to answers to the questions raised. “They are insulting the Upper House, the glorious tradition of the Upper House,” he added.
The walkout and ensuing statements underscore the escalating tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition parties, highlighting the deep political divide over the interpretation and respect for the Indian Constitution.
