Kolkata: In a significant development, Kolkata Police on Thursday arrested five individuals accused of plotting to vandalize the residence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The alleged conspiracy was uncovered through a WhatsApp group titled ‘We Want Justice,’ where a voice clip was circulated, urging members to gather at Kalighat, a prominent neighborhood in south Kolkata, to execute the plan.

Among those arrested is Subham Sen Sharma, who is identified as the creator of the incendiary audio clip. The clip reportedly contained explicit threats, with Sharma allegedly urging group members to storm the Chief Minister’s Kalighat residence, suggesting that such an act would force her resignation.

In the audio clip, Sharma allegedly stated, “Don’t need to go to Nabanna (the Secretariat), do one thing, let’s go to Kalighat all together and vandalize. Following this, Mamata Banerjee will be sidelined automatically. She will resign herself. She has fear in her mind.” He further claimed that the police presence at Kalighat would be insufficient to stop their actions, asserting, “How long will the police protect Kalighat? One hour? Two hours? How many cops will come? Hardly 20-30? We have many more men. Don’t take pressure, come to Kalighat, we are also going.”

Four other individuals, including the creator and administrator of the WhatsApp group, were also detained for their alleged involvement in the conspiracy. The arrests were made following actionable intelligence gathered by police sources.

In a related development, Kolkata Police also apprehended Prabir, a leader of the Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj, a newly formed student organization, in connection with the violent clashes that erupted during the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally in Kolkata on Tuesday. The rally, organized by the Chhatra Samaj, was a protest march aimed at the Secretariat, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the recent rape and murder of a female trainee doctor. The demonstration escalated into violence, resulting in clashes between protesters and the police, leading to numerous injuries and arrests.

More than 200 individuals were taken into custody during the protests, which continued for several hours. Police reported that 15 of their personnel, along with 14 state police officers, sustained injuries during the confrontations.
