Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has intensified its probe into the August 9 rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, questioning Dr. Birupaksha Biswas on Saturday. Dr. Biswas, reportedly part of the so-called ‘North Bengal lobby’, is said to be closely linked to Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the medical college.
Recently transferred from Burdwan Medical College to Kakdwip Hospital in South 24 Parganas, Dr. Biswas appeared before CBI officers at their Salt Lake office in Kolkata, as reported by PTI.
CBI Focus on August 9 Events
According to a CBI officer, Dr. Biswas is being questioned about his presence at RG Kar Medical College on August 9, despite not having any official engagement at the hospital on that day. The officer also mentioned that Biswas is allegedly part of the ‘North Bengal lobby’, a group of doctors and officials known for their influence in West Bengal’s medical colleges. This group has been accused of intimidating students at government-run medical facilities.
FIR Filed Against Three Doctors
Along with Dr. Biswas, two other doctors—Avik De and Ranjit Saha—have been named in an FIR for allegedly threatening students at various medical colleges and hospitals across the state. The trio has been booked under Section 351 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, the new penal code, for assault by gesture or preparation, making victims fear criminal force.
Dr. Sandip Ghosh’s Role Under Scrutiny
Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who was removed as the principal of RG Kar Medical College and subsequently suspended, is under investigation for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities at the institution. Additionally, the CBI is probing his role in delaying the FIR in the rape-murder case by at least 14 hours.
Authorities suspect that Dr. Ghosh may have been involved in a conspiracy to destroy evidence in connection with the crime. The CBI continues its investigation to uncover more details related to the case and the activities of the North Bengal lobby.
The investigation remains ongoing, with further questioning expected in the coming days as the CBI works to unravel the complete sequence of events.
