Kolkata: Durga Puja 2024 kicked off on October 9 with a dazzling display of pandals across India, but none have caught the public’s imagination quite like the one in Salt Lake AK Block, Kolkata. This unique raindrop-themed pandal has drawn attention for its innovative approach to rainwater conservation, combining art and environmental awareness in an extraordinary fashion.
With a reported budget of ₹75 lakh, the pandal features metal and plastic utensils placed in a pit to collect water droplets from the roof, replicating the sounds of traditional dhak drums as the droplets fall. The installation has gone viral on social media, with a video shared by @calcuttacacophony racking up over 3.5 million views.
Cultural Brilliance Meets Social Responsibility
The raindrop pandal is a striking blend of Kolkata’s cultural creativity and modern environmental consciousness. One viewer commented, “Wow… creativity at its best… hats off to the concept creator,” while others saw it as an opportunity for the government to foster creativity that could attract industries like IT to the city.
Environmental Awareness Takes Center Stage
Along with the raindrop-themed pandal, another striking installation at Jagat Mukherjee Park pays tribute to Kolkata’s Green Line underwater metro and addresses the pressing issue of Ganga River pollution, underscoring Durga Puja’s increasing focus on sustainability.
