Suncheon, April 7: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty of India upset Singapore’s Hee Yong Kai Terry and Loh Kean Hean on Thursday to advance to the quarter-finals of the Korea Open Badminton Championships 2022.

The third-seeds overcame Hee Yong Kai Terry and Loh Kean Hean 21-15, 21-19 in a 36-minute second-round match at the Palma Stadium in the BWF Super 500 event.

After grabbing a three-point lead at the first mid-game break, the Indian Open champions cruised through the first game. In the final stages of the match, the Singaporeans improved their performance, but it was too late to catch up with the high-flying Indians.

An Seyoung of South Korea, the world No. 4, defeated Singaporean Yeo Jia Min, ranked 16, for the final quarter-final berth in the women’s singles earlier in the day. Yeo Jia Min was defeated by the 20-year-old South Korean by a score of 21-10, 21-10.

PV Sindhu, the third seed, also advanced to the quarter-finals on Court 4. In the second round of her women’s singles event, the two-time Olympic medalist Indian upset world No. 26 Aya Ohori of Japan 21-15, 21-10. PV Sindhu defeated Ohori in 37 minutes for her 12th win in as many games. She will now compete in the quarter-finals against Busanan Ongbamrungphan.

Kidambi Srikanth, the former world No. 1, defeated Israel’s Misha Zilberman 21-18, 21-6 on Court 3. The Indian, who won silver in the World Championships, had to work hard in the first game but eventually won 21-18.

The Indians, on the other hand, altered gears in the second game, cruising to a 12-0 lead before Misha Zilberman could even bat. Srikanth easily handled the task and finished the match in 33 minutes.
