Mumbai: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has been directed by Mumbai Police to appear for questioning on Monday in connection with a controversial parody act targeting Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Despite citing “threats to life” and requesting time until April 3 to join the probe, police sources confirmed that his request was denied, and no further extension would be granted.
Kamra faces multiple charges, including defamation and statements conducing to public mischief, following the release of a video from his show at Mumbai’s Habitat Studio. In the performance, the comic used a parody of the 1997 Bollywood song ‘Bholi Si Surat’ to satirize Shinde, calling him a “gaddar” (traitor)—a reference to Shinde’s 2022 rebellion that brought down the Uddhav Thackeray-led government and split the Shiv Sena.
Studio Vandalised, Civic Action Follows
After the video gained traction online, Shinde supporters stormed the Habitat Studio in Khar, vandalising equipment. The next day, BMC officials conducted a demolition drive at the studio citing violations of building regulations.
The studio has since announced a temporary shutdown, clarifying that it merely provides a platform for artists and does not endorse or control their content.
Kamra Speaks Out
Responding to the backlash, Kamra stood firm. “Attacking a venue for a comedian’s words is as senseless as overturning a lorry carrying tomatoes, because you didn’t like the butter chicken you were served,” he posted on X. He emphasized that neither the venue nor any political party was responsible for his remarks.
Kamra, 36, has expressed his willingness to cooperate with police and courts but questioned the selective application of the law. “Will the law also be applied to those who believe vandalism is the correct response to satire?” he asked, further criticising the BMC’s sudden demolition drive as politically motivated.
Political Backlash Grows
The incident has triggered a political storm. Eknath Shinde has accused Kamra of performing the act at the Opposition’s behest. In contrast, Uddhav Thackeray defended the comedian, stating that Kamra said “nothing wrong,” and took another swipe at Shinde by reiterating the “gaddar” tag.
Kamra has reportedly been receiving threat calls from Shinde’s supporters, intensifying his concerns about personal safety.
