Low usage, high bill: Ranchiites face billing issues in GAIL’s gas connection

Ranchi, Dec 19: The Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), which has been carrying out infrastructure development and pipeline work since 2018 in Ranchi, has currently covered over 30,000 households in Ranchi, according to a GAIL official.

However, many consumers across the city have complained that there is some issue with the billing system as, at times, the amount generated is higher than the actual amount.

A few residents of Mecon spoke to Lagatar24.com and informed that the service provided by GAIL is up to the mark but when it comes to billing, things are not that smooth.

Prashant Jha, an employee of Mecon said that approximately every quarter of the Mecon colony has been equipped with the gas supply by GAIL and quite a few have complained about the billing issue.

“Luckily, the service provided by GAIL is really nice. If there is any mechanical issue they try to repair it within a day or by the next day. However, many have told me that their billing system is not accurate. It is probably because it is semi-automatic,” Jha said.

He added that the person who comes to take the reading calculates the number present in the meter with some constant unit and then generates the payable amount. There have been instances when workers from GAIL themselves have said that there have been errors from their end.

Another resident of Mecon requesting anonymity said that there was an instance when he hardly used the gas but still received a bill worth Rs 600 which was really shocking.

“I was shocked because I was out of town for more than 10 days and did not use the gas and still I received a bill of around Rs 600. I thought there must be some kind of leakage or anything but that was not the case,” he said.

In order to know the reason behind it, lagatar24.com tried to contact the CGD official from GAIL but he could not be contacted.

Jha said that it would be better if the officials from GAIL come up with a fully automatic meter which can be installed at home and it will show the exact amount which is payable instead of calculating it manually.
