New Delhi, June 27: The Supreme Court on Monday heard the appeal pertaining to the political crisis in Maharashtra and questioned rebel leader Eknath Shinde and other MLAs, ‘Why did you not go to the high court?’
Neeraj K. Kaul, the attorney who is defending them, replied,“Threats to us and our families make it non-conducive to pursue cases in Mumbai.”
After deputy assembly speaker Narhari Zirwal delivered disqualification notifications to 16 MLAs and requested that they appear on Monday, the breakaway faction filed two petitions.
Since last Wednesday, the Shinde group has set up camp in Guwahati, Assam. After traveling to Surat in Gujarat with some of the rebel leaders last week, Shinde’s uprising came to fruition. The BJP is in power in both states.
Shinde’s group has been gaining power. Uddhav Thackeray, the chief minister of Maharashtra, reassigned the portfolios of nine dissident ministers to other officials while their plea was scheduled for consideration in the top court.
Shinde stated there were a group of 39 MLAs at the Supreme Court on Monday. Prior to this, he had emphasised in his plea that the Uddhav Thackeray government had lost its majority in the state parliament and that the bulk of the 55 Sena MLAs was now part of the breakaway camp.
