Mumbai: In a significant move ahead of the state assembly elections, the Maharashtra Government has declared desi (indigenous) cows as “Rajyamata-Gomata” owing to their historical, spiritual, and agricultural significance, according to an official notification issued on Monday.
Vedic and Nutritional Importance of Indigenous Cows
The state Agriculture, Dairy Development, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries Department highlighted several reasons behind this decision, including the Vedic-era importance of cows and their integral role in human nutrition. Indigenous cow milk has long been valued for its nutritional benefits, and cow dung has been lauded for its contribution to organic farming and enhancing soil fertility.
Promoting Ayurvedic and Panchgavya Treatments
The official government resolution also emphasized the use of cow products in traditional Ayurvedic treatments and panchgavya therapy, which utilize cow dung, milk, urine, curd, and ghee for holistic healing. The decision reflects the government’s intention to promote these traditional methods alongside sustainable agricultural practices.
Cultural and Agricultural Impact
An official said that this move not only highlights the cow’s spiritual and scientific role in Indian society but also underscores the state’s commitment to sustainable farming. “Cow dung, in particular, has been shown to improve soil fertility and play a crucial role in organic farming,” he added.
The declaration comes as part of Maharashtra’s broader effort to preserve and promote indigenous cattle breeds while tapping into their potential in agriculture, nutrition, and health.
