Gadchiroli, July 6: Police in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli area had detained two people and confiscated Rs 27.62 lakhs, including multiple Rs 2000 notes, for allegedly helping Naxalites in illegally exchanging the currency, officials reported on Thursday.

The arrested suspects have been named by the authorities as Rohit Mangu Korsa (24) and Biplav Gitish Sikdar (24).

“Rs 27.62 lakh rupees cash including Rs 2000 notes were recovered from the duo,” they said.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) decided to withdraw Rs 2000 notes from circulation, and the police claimed that the Naxalites were continuously attempting to exchange the currency notes that they had obtained through extortion.

“These notes are suspected to have been given by Naxalites for exchange,” official sources said.

We learned from reliable sources that the police stopped both accused people in Aheri on suspicion when they were riding motorcycles.

Searching them turned up Rs 27.62 lakh in cash. These include 3072 notes of Rs 500 for Rs 15.36 lakh, seven notes of Rs 200 worth Rs 1400 and 607 notes of Rs 2000 worth Rs 12.14 lakh, they continued.

A complaint has been filed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against both of them, according to the police. The matter is currently the subject of more investigation.
