Bahraich: The main accused in the violence during the Durga Puja celebrations in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested near the Nepal border following a police encounter. Sarfaraz, who was attempting to flee, along with co-accused Talib, was apprehended after both sustained injuries during the encounter. The police confirmed that both are receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.

The clashes erupted in the Mahrajganj area of Mansoor village on Sunday evening over a disagreement related to loudspeaker music during the Durga idol immersion procession. The altercation escalated into stone-throwing and firing, leaving six people injured, including a man who later succumbed to gunshot wounds.

Following the fatality, the victim’s family refused to cremate the body, staging a sit-in protest. They agreed to move forward with the cremation after receiving assurances from the police and local administration about strict action.

As tensions continued to rise the next day, incidents of arson and further violence were reported in some areas. The police conducted flag marches to restore order and detained over 30 individuals connected to the violence.
