NEW DELHI: Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, during his first official visit to India, has sought to reassure New Delhi of his country’s commitment to maintaining strong bilateral ties, dismissing concerns over past tensions. Muizzu, who campaigned on an ‘India Out’ platform, now affirms that the Maldives will not compromise India’s security, calling the nation a “valued partner and friend.”

Arriving in New Delhi on Sunday, Muizzu told The Times of India that while the Maldives is focused on diversifying its international relations, it remains deeply committed to ensuring that its actions do not threaten regional stability. “Maldives would never do anything to undermine the security of India,” Muizzu stated, highlighting that defence cooperation will continue to be a priority.

A Diplomatic Shift

Muizzu’s remarks signal a significant shift from his previous rhetoric, where his administration had pushed for the removal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives. Addressing these concerns, Muizzu clarified that the request to replace Indian military personnel with technical staff was in response to the demands of the Maldivian people, but stressed that the relationship between India and the Maldives remains “strong and historic.”

Restoring Tourism

Beyond defence and diplomatic ties, Muizzu made a special appeal to Indian tourists, a key demographic for the Maldives’ tourism industry, which faced a downturn amid the diplomatic row last year. “Indians make a positive contribution… Indian tourists are welcome,” he said, inviting them to return and enjoy the archipelago.

Ongoing Cooperation

Muizzu also praised India for its assistance with infrastructure projects, such as the Greater Male Connectivity Project and water and sewerage facilities across 28 islands. These projects, he noted, are central to his administration’s efforts to improve the lives of Maldivians while maintaining strategic partnerships with India.

Muizzu’s visit, which includes meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior officials, marks a critical moment in restoring and strengthening India-Maldives relations after months of strained ties. The president’s remarks, especially regarding defence cooperation and tourism, reflect a broader effort to reaffirm the Maldives’ position as a key partner in regional peace and stability.
