New Delhi: Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, along with First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, arrived in India on Sunday for a crucial state visit aimed at repairing diplomatic relations between the two South Asian nations. The visit, which began with Muizzu landing at Air Force Station Palam in New Delhi around 4:30 pm, marks a significant step toward mending the previously strained ties between India and the Maldives.

Muizzu is scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other senior officials during his visit. These meetings are expected to focus on economic cooperation, maritime security, and addressing regional challenges.

Repairing Strained Diplomatic Ties

Muizzu’s rise to power in 2023 was characterized by the “India Out” campaign, advocating for the removal of Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives. However, despite his initial concerns, the Indian aircraft in the Maldives continue to be operated by a civilian crew. In recent months, the relationship between the two countries has seen signs of improvement, with both sides working toward bridging the diplomatic gap.

Earlier this year, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar visited the Maldives in August, following Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer’s visit to India in May. Additionally, India extended its support to the Maldives by renewing treasury bills worth $50 million to help the country avoid default on Islamic bond payments.

Balancing Ties Between India and China

Muizzu, who is known for his pro-China stance, has been carefully balancing his country’s foreign policy between regional powers India and China. In his recent interactions, including at Princeton University during his visit to the United States for the United Nations General Assembly, Muizzu clarified that the Maldives’ concerns were focused on the presence of foreign military personnel rather than on any specific country.

In a further sign of his commitment to easing tensions with India, Muizzu took action against members of his government who had made derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Modi on social media. Two junior ministers who were suspended earlier this year for their comments eventually resigned, signaling a shift in Muizzu’s approach towards India.

Key Meetings and Ceremonial Events

On Sunday evening, Muizzu was welcomed by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at his hotel, ITC Maurya. Monday will see a series of key events, starting with a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhawan, a wreath-laying ceremony at Rajghat, followed by a meeting with Prime Minister Modi. Several agreements are expected to be signed, with discussions centered on economic cooperation, maritime security, and regional stability.

Muizzu’s itinerary also includes visits to Mumbai and Bengaluru, where he will engage with the business community and the Maldivian diaspora in an effort to boost investment ties and strengthen economic collaboration.
