New Delhi, Nov 14: Mamata Banerjee on Monday tendered an apology on behalf of her minister Akhil Giri, who received harsh criticism for making derogatory comments against Droupadi Murmu, the president of India.
Days after West Bengal minister Akhil Giri was caught on camera making comments about the President’s appearance and making fun of the Bharatiya Janata Party in a viral video, the leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) issued an apology.
“We respect the President a lot. She is a very sweet lady, I apologise for the comments,” Banerjee said, adding that “Akhil (Giri) has done something wrong; I condemn the comments and I apologise.
“Beauty is not about how you look, it is about how you are from the inside,” she added.
“They (BJP) said that I am not good-looking. We don’t judge anyone by their appearance. We respect the office of the President (of India). But how does our President look?” Giri, the minister of state for Correctional Homes, was heard on Friday evening saying at a rally in a village in Nandigram.

After Giri’s disparaging comments against the president drew considerable criticism and increasing calls for his dismissal, Mamata said the minister had been warned.
“We all respect the president. She is a highly respected lady. Akhil Giri should not have said this. We condemn this. The party has cautioned him. We do not support this opinion. It has been conveyed to him and he should not say anything on it further. Akhil has done injustice,” TMC supremo said.
