Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee came down heavily on the Modi government and key NDA allies Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar at an Imams’ conference in Kolkata on Wednesday. The meet was held in response to the Waqf (Amendment) Act, which the Bengal government has refused to implement.
“You vote for them, but they support BJP”: Mamata attacks Nitish, Naidu
In a sharp rebuke to her former INDIA bloc partners, Mamata accused Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu of sacrificing Muslim votes for political gain. “You vote for them, but they support BJP for power. They have betrayed your trust,” she said. Mamata also added, “To give you power, we can offer our heart and even blood, yet you kept voting for Naidu and Nitish.”
Waqf Amendment Should Have Needed Two-Third Majority: Mamata
Questioning the legislative process behind the Waqf law, Mamata asked why the BJP government passed such a major amendment with a simple majority. “If they truly wanted to amend the Waqf Act, why didn’t they do it with a two-thirds majority? Such a law should be passed as a constitutional amendment,” she argued.
Mamata Refuses To Enforce Waqf Law In Bengal
Reiterating her earlier stance, Mamata declared that the Waqf Amendment Act will not be implemented in West Bengal. “I have already made it clear — this law will not apply in our state. The Centre must roll it back,” she asserted to loud cheers from the gathered imams.
Blames BJP For Murshidabad Violence, Cites MHA Input
Referring to the recent Murshidabad violence, Mamata said it was orchestrated by the BJP. Quoting a tweet by ANI, she pointed out that the Union Home Ministry has acknowledged the involvement of elements from Bangladesh. “If that’s true, the responsibility lies with the Centre. The border is secured by BSF, not the state police,” she noted. “Why did the BJP allow outsiders to enter, cause unrest and flee?”
Calls For Unity Within INDIA Bloc
Despite her sharp words for Nitish and Naidu, Mamata made a renewed appeal for unity within the INDIA bloc. “We must fight together. This is not about elections alone — it is about saving the soul of India,” she declared.
