Kolkata, May 22: A mob set fire to abandoned homes in Imphal’s New Lambulane area this morning as fresh violence sparked anxiety and tension in Manipur. To put out the flames, security personnel arrived at the scene. To maintain control, the Army and paramilitary troops have been called in.

Conflicts started this morning in Imphal’s New Checkon Bazaar area. This was followed by instances of arson, and the police have detained three people for their apparent participation.

According to news agency PTI, military soldiers stationed nearby hurried to the scene and took the required actions, such as using force and firing tear gas shells, to disperse the crowd. As a result, a small number of people suffered minor injuries.

Curfew was reinstated in the entire state from 6 am to 2 pm after complaints of arson. The curfew was earlier relaxed from 6 am to 4 pm.

Due to reports of occurrences like the arson of homes and other properties from the state, the ban on internet services has been extended for an additional five days.

“There is apprehension that anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passions of the public, which might have serious repercussions for the law-and-order situation in the state of Manipur,” an official order said.

“This order is being issued to prevent any disturbances of peace and public order in the jurisdiction of the State of Manipur and shall be in force for another five days with immediate effect from the time this suspension order becomes operational till 3 pm of 26-05-2023,” it added.
