Lucknow, May 12: Mayawati, speaking in favour of senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, said on Thursday that Azam Khan protracted incarceration is being viewed by the common man as a strangulation of justice.

Mayawati also slammed the BJP government for allegedly discriminating against the poor, Dalits, tribals, and Muslims, as well as harassing political opponents.

“In Uttar Pradesh and other BJP-ruled states, like the Congress, the manner in which poor, Dalits, tribals, and Muslims are harassed by making them victims of atrocities and fear is very sad, whereas their (BJP) kindness is continuing in the affairs of others,” the BSP chief said in a series of tweets.

“In this sequence, the matter of the UP government’s continuous hateful and terror (like) action against its opponents and keeping senior MLA Mohammad Azam Khan in jail for about two-and-a-half years is in the news,” the BSP chief said, “which, in the eyes of the people, if not strangulating justice then what?” she added.

Notably Azam Khan, a top Samajwadi Party leader and MLA from Rampur, is currently imprisoned on corruption accusations. He has been imprisoned in Sitapur for nearly two years. The Allahabad High Court granted Azam Khan bail in the matter of illegal possession of enemy property on Wednesday, which came as a huge comfort to him. Former state minister Azam Khan was granted bail in 88 of 89 cases. He will be released from prison only once the last case’s bail is granted.

Mayawati, a former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, also criticised local authorities’ anti-encroachment drive in various areas, including the national capital.
