Ranchi, Jan.18: Opening brain for surgery will soon become a matter of past and a rare event as a doctor at Bhagwan Mahavir Medica Super Specialty Hospital in the Jharkhand capital has started neuro-endoscopic surgery in which surgery is done without opening brain after making a hole.
During the last one month, as many as three neuro endoscopic surgeries have been done in the hospital and its being seen as great help for those requiring neuro-surgery, an hospital insider said.
“The surgery is being done by neurosurgeon Dr Amit Kumar who obtained specialized training for this in Japan. Dr Kumar joined the hospital a month ago and has so far benefitted three,” the insider said.
Contacted Dr Kumar, he confirmed the fact sharing its advantage.
“Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICHs) are responsible for 10%-30% of all strokes and they remain a significant cause of all stroke-related mortality and morbidity. Intracerebral hemorrhages (ICHs) have been commonly treated using conventional craniotomy, which has high mortality (22%–36%) and poor hematoma evacuation rate (44%–74%). Neuro endoscopic surgery as a minimal invasive treatment for intracerebral hemorrhage is a promising approach,” Dr Kumar said.
“Endoscope-assisted keyhole approach might be an efficiency, safety, and minimal invasiveness surgical option to craniotomy. Neuro endoscopic surgery has many advantages, such as minimally invasive, high evacuation rate, low incidence of complication, better protection of brain tissue, and less surgery related injuries. Endoscopic hematoma removal reduces the operative time and invasiveness, demonstrating a significant benefit for the neurological function and mortality and potentially improves the outcomes. The incidence of infectious complications in the neuro endoscopic group was low, because of milder brain injury, shorter skin incisions, and shorter operation times,” Dr Kumar added.
