Patna, March 5: In response to recent reports that migrant workers from Bihar were being attacked in Tamil Nadu, Tejashwi Yadav, the deputy chief minister of Bihar, urged news agency ANI that the Centre should step in and take action to fix the issue between the two states.

With allegations of their persecution making the rounds on social media, MK Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, told Nitish Kumar, his counterpart in Bihar, that all migrant workers from that state would be safe.

“The Bihar government is serious in this matter. Hence, a team has been sent to Tamil Nadu. Both the Bihar and Tamil Nadu governments will not tolerate these alleged attacks on migrants,” Yadav said.

“A newspaper reported that the Bihar BJP chief called the party chief of Tamil Nadu, who told him that no such incident had taken place. Our government has sent a team to find the truth. Some districts in Tamil Nadu have issued helpline numbers for migrant workers,” he added.

According to unsubstantiated claims on social media, Tamil Nadu has been the target of hate attacks against Hindi-speaking labourers from Bihar.

The alleged films of the attack on the workers were fraudulent and deceptive, according to the state police, but the matter has grown into a political storm.

For the migrant workers from Bihar in the southern state, the rumours caused panic and anxiety. As the matter came up in the Bihar Legislature, Nitish Kumar dispatched a group of officials to engage with the workers in Tamil Nadu.
