Kolkata: In a tragic incident that has sparked widespread anger, a minor girl was allegedly kidnapped and murdered in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district. The case has led to protests and vandalism, with a local police camp being set on fire by angry residents. While the police await the post-mortem report, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has claimed the girl was raped before being murdered, putting the Trinamool Congress-led government under further scrutiny.
The incident comes as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s government faces criticism for its handling of the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College.
Details of the Incident
The girl, who was a minor, went missing on Friday after leaving home to attend a coaching class in Mahishamari, South 24 Parganas. Her family filed a missing person’s complaint that night when she failed to return. The police discovered her body in a field at around 3:30 am on Saturday, bearing multiple injuries.
Following the recovery of the body, residents took to the streets in protest, vandalizing and setting a police camp on fire.
Arrest and Investigation
Police have arrested a 19-year-old man, Mostakin Sardar, in connection with the kidnapping and murder. An investigation is underway, and the police have deployed a large force to prevent further escalation of protests in the area. Protesters armed with sticks and brooms remain on the streets, demanding justice for the victim.
Political Repercussions
Union Minister and BJP State President Sukanta Majumdar has alleged that the girl was raped and criticized the Mamata Banerjee government for failing to control the law and order situation. “Such crimes are happening right before Durga Puja, showing that Mamata Banerjee has no control over the administration. The rape and murder of this minor girl is yet another example of the deteriorating safety in Bengal,” Majumdar said, calling for Banerjee’s resignation.
However, the police have clarified that rape has not been confirmed and the post-mortem report is awaited.
