Rabat, Sept 10: The death toll from the devastating earthquake in Morocco has increased to more than 2,000. At least 2,059 people have been injured. The country’s Home Ministry informed late Saturday night that 2,012 people died in the earthquake that occurred late Friday night. The death toll is expected to rise further as rescuers face difficulties reaching the most affected remote areas.
According to the ministry, the maximum number of deaths of 1,293 people have occurred in Al Hauz province. Additionally, at least 2,059 people have been injured, out of which 1,404 are in critical condition.
After the earthquake, the Moroccan government has declared three days of national mourning. Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has directed the armed forces to deploy special search and rescue teams and a surgical field hospital, according to an army statement.
An earthquake of 6.8 magnitude occurred in Morocco on Friday, which is the worst earthquake to hit the country in the last 120 years. Leaders of many countries including Prime Minister Modi have offered help to Morocco.
