Koderma, June 6: Koderma Deputy Development Commissioner (DDC) Rituraj today said that in order to give a new identity to Kalakand, a famous mouth-watering sweet of the district, in India and globally, meaningful steps are being taken for its GI (Geographical Indication) tagging. He said many works are being done for the purpose of completing the process for GI tagging. He said some important information was also made available from the Kalakand producers of the district.
Rituraj was introduced to the benefits of GI tagging of Kalakand and its far-reaching dimensions in the future. About the benefits of the GI tag, it helps consumers to get quality products of desired traits and authenticity. It increases trade and tourism as well. It prevents the unauthorised use of Geographical Indication Tags products by others. It prohibits malpractice and avoids the sale of low-quality products in the market.
Sources said the GI tag is given to an item with a specific identity of any region, which has been a speciality of that region for years. It is primarily an agricultural, natural product or a manufactured product, handicrafts and industrial goods that originate in a certain geographical area which is being manufactured or produced in a specific geographical area for 10 years or more.
Apart from mica exports and song requests to Vividh Bharati, the Jhumri Telaiya town is famous for its kalakand, a sweet made with milk, saffron and cream.
Producers of Kalakand said they were supplying Kalakand to Gulf countries as well.
