Dhanbad, Oct 7: Rattled by frequent family feud over inter-caste marriage, a young couple jumped into a 100 feet deep stone mine in Ramnagar village under Malpahadi police outpost (OP) of Pakur district on Thursday afternoon.
Police officials informed that the husband died on the spot while his wife was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition. The couple were identified as Pappu Rikhiason (22) and Poddo Karmkar (20).
Pakur Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Ajit Kumar Vimal told the media that the incident took place in the afternoon. Allegedly, the couple jumped into the mines with the intention of committing suicide. On receiving the information, Malpahadi outpost (OP) police reached the spot and dragged the couple out from the mines with the help of local villagers. They were then admitted to a nearby health centre. The doctor declared Pappu Rakhiason brought dead.
Quoting villagers, the police officials said that the couple had an inter-caste marriage recently. Family members of Pappu Rakhiason were unhappy with the wedding and were opposing them strongly. Pappu was unemployed and rattled by the daily bickering in the family over their marriage, he along with his wife jumped into the nearby stone mines.
“Investigation of the incident is going on. After interrogating injured Poddo Karmkar, police would initiate legal action against the guilty people . For the time being, police are waiting for her recovery as Poddo is struggling with her life in the hospital,” said the SDPO.
