Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the singles competition at the Australian Open, citing ongoing fitness concerns, and will now focus solely on playing in the doubles event.
Injury Struggles Force Singles Withdrawal
The 30-year-old has been battling recurring foot, knee, and wrist injuries over the past few years, which have limited his participation on the singles circuit. This season, Kyrgios has played only five singles matches, losing four of them, and has appeared in just six professional singles matches over the last three years.
Decision Announced on Social Media
In an Instagram post, Kyrgios explained that while he feels fit enough to return to the court, competing in five-set singles matches is a different challenge and he is not fully ready yet. He said the Australian Open means everything to him, but he preferred to give his singles spot to another player ready to make the most of the opportunity, adding that he plans to return stronger next year.
Doubles Campaign With Kokkinakis
Kyrgios is expected to partner with Thanasi Kokkinakis in the doubles draw. The duo recently played together at the Brisbane International, where they were eliminated in the second round by French pair Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul.
Recent Form and Career Context
Kyrgios made his competitive return through exhibition matches in New York and Dubai before receiving a wildcard entry into the Brisbane International, where he lost in the first round to Aleksandar Kovacevic. Despite his injury setbacks, Kyrgios remains one of Australia’s most popular players, with a Wimbledon final appearance and multiple ATP titles to his name. He was also forced to miss the US Open and Davis Cup last year due to fitness issues and is now hoping for a strong comeback through the Australian Open doubles.
