New Delhi: The horrific murder of 26-year-old Nikki Bhati, who was burnt alive in Greater Noida over dowry demands, has revealed a troubling history of violence and infidelity involving her husband, Vipin Bhati. He was previously named in a 2024 assault case linked to an extramarital affair, which Nikki herself had discovered.
Vipin’s Earlier Case of Violence
In October 2024, a woman filed an FIR at Jarcha Police Station accusing Vipin of assault and exploitation. Despite being married to Nikki, he was reportedly in a relationship with the complainant. When Nikki and her sister Kanchan caught him with the woman, Vipin allegedly beat her in an attempt to prove innocence. The case further exposed his violent tendencies that predated Nikki’s tragic death.
Murder and Arrests in Present Case
On August 21, Nikki was beaten, doused with a flammable liquid, and set ablaze inside her Sirsa village home. She died on the way to Safdarjung Hospital after suffering 70% burns. Disturbing videos recorded by her sister show her being dragged by her hair and later engulfed in flames. Police arrested Vipin, his mother Daya, father Satveer, and brother Rohit. Vipin was shot in the leg during an alleged escape attempt.
Community Tensions and Social Media Disputes
Neighbours described long-running disputes in the Bhati household. Nikki and Kanchan ran a beauty parlour and shared makeover reels online, which their husbands opposed. A panchayat was once convened after tensions peaked, forcing the sisters to return to their in-laws’ home despite abuse.
Dowry Demands Escalated
Nikki’s family maintains dowry harassment was the prime reason for her death. At marriage in 2016, they had already given a Scorpio SUV, gold, and cash. Later demands included ₹36 lakh and a luxury car. Her father, Bhikahri Singh, admitted giving money repeatedly “to keep peace” but now mourns her violent end: “They burned her alive… By the time we reached Safdarjung Hospital, she was gone. I lost my daughter, what is left now?”
Years of Torture and Pressure from Community
Married at just 18, Nikki endured years of financial and physical abuse. She often returned to her parents after beatings, but compromises brokered by community elders forced her back. Even a week before her death, she was assaulted on Janmashtami but remained at her in-laws after another so-called compromise.
