The index is a detailed examination of India’s export achievements, published by NITI Aayog in collaboration with the Institute of Competitiveness. The index is designed to compare the performance of states and UTs to that of their peers and to identify issues so that better policy tools may be developed to promote export-led growth at the subnational level.
The EPI evaluates states and UTs based on four main pillars: policy, business ecosystem, export ecosystem, and export performance, as well as 11 sub-pillars such as export promotion policy, institutional framework, business environment, infrastructure, and transportation connectivity, access to finance, export infrastructure, trade support, R&D infrastructure, export diversification, and growth orientation.
Notably, the 2021 Index pointed out three major challenges to India’s export promotion include intra- and inter-regional differences in export infrastructure; weak trade support and growth orientation across states; and lack of R&D infrastructure to promote complex and unique exports.
