Patna: Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar has stepped down as the Chief Minister of Bihar, bringing an end to his nearly two-decade-long tenure at the helm of the state. The veteran leader is expected to move to the Rajya Sabha after guiding his party to another electoral victory in the December 2025 Assembly elections.
End Of A Long Political Era In Bihar
Nitish Kumar’s resignation marks a significant moment in Bihar politics. His departure from the top post will pave the way for the state to get its first Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Over the years, Kumar served as Bihar’s Chief Minister ten times and became one of the most influential political figures in the state.
Rise Of ‘Sushasan Babu’
Nitish Kumar built his political image around the idea of “sushasan” (good governance). After assuming power in 2005, he focused on improving law and order, strengthening the judicial system, and expanding infrastructure such as roads and electricity supply. His governance model earned him the popular nickname “Sushasan Babu”.
Social Engineering And Welfare Policies
A major factor behind his political success was his social engineering strategy. Nitish Kumar created special categories within backward and Dalit communities, such as “Ati Pichhda” (Extremely Backward Classes) and “Mahadalits,” and introduced welfare schemes and reservations aimed at these groups. Together, these communities form a significant share of Bihar’s population and became a strong support base for the JD(U).
He also introduced welfare programs such as free bicycles and school uniforms for girls, encouraging female education and increasing school attendance.
Women Voters Became Key Support Base
Nitish Kumar’s decision to implement prohibition in Bihar proved to be politically significant. Although the policy resulted in a loss of substantial excise revenue, it gained strong support from women voters, particularly in rural areas. Over time, women emerged as one of his most reliable electoral bases.
Political Flexibility Shaped His Career
Nitish Kumar’s political journey was also marked by frequent shifts in alliances between the BJP-led NDA and the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan. Critics often referred to him as “Paltu Kumar” for these changes, but his ability to rebuild alliances repeatedly helped him remain a central figure in Bihar politics.
A Defining Political Legacy
At 75, Nitish Kumar leaves the Chief Minister’s office with a long electoral record and a reputation for shaping Bihar’s governance model for two decades. His policies on governance reforms, social welfare, and political coalition-building have left a lasting imprint on the state’s political landscape.
