New Delhi, March 5: Governor RN Ravi said on Sunday that North Indian workers need not be alarmed because the State government is committed to providing them security. This was said in an effort to allay the fear of migrant workers working in Tamil Nadu that was sparked after several “fake” videos of attacks on them appeared on social media.
“The North Indian labourers in Tamil Nadu not to panic and feel insecure, as the people of Tamil Nadu are very nice and friendly, and the state government is committed to providing them security,” Governor RN Ravi said.
The Governor’s announcement followed a state-wide fear that was precipitated after Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar, expressed worry and took notice of the alleged footage of “attacks” on workers headquartered in Bihar on Thursday.
In order to assure the safety of labourers from his state, Kumar instructed the chief secretary and DGP of the state to communicate with representatives of the Tamil Nadu government. When many workers chose to skip work, the panic had a severe negative impact on Tamil Nadu’s migrant worker-dependent industry.
Taking cognizance of the alarm, Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police Sylendra Babu published a statement, saying that the video doing rounds of social media was “fake” and “mischievous”.
“Somebody in Bihar posted false and mischievous videos saying that migrant workers were attacked in Tamil Nadu. Two videos were posted. Both are false as these incidents happened at an earlier date in Tiruppur and Coimbatore. One was a clash between two groups of migrant workers from Bihar while another was from a clash between two local residents in Coimbatore,” the top cop said.
In response to the incident, Tamil Nadu police have booked four persons in different districts of the southern state.
